{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"JobPosting","title":"CTO","description":"Our client is building technology to simplify the process of connecting residents and property managers with utility services when they move. The platform helps identify the utility providers serving a specific address and automates the process of establishing utility services through utility companies’ websites and other digital channels.
\n
\nThe company is tackling complex technical challenges that existing solutions have not fully solved. Its platform combines utility-service mapping, browser-based automation, AI-driven workflows, and the secure handling of sensitive customer information.
\n
\nWith investor backing and an ambitious growth vision, they are seeking a hands-on technology leader to help build a highly capable engineering organization and advance the platform’s technical capabilities.
\n
\nThe Opportunity
\nWe are looking for a CTO or VP of Engineering who combines exceptional technical depth with strong engineering leadership. This is an opportunity for a builder—someone who can work through difficult technical problems, introduce a more disciplined and effective development process, and help a talented team achieve significantly more through AI.
\n
\nThe successful candidate will take ownership of the engineering organization, establish clear standards for how software is developed and delivered, and help solve some of the company’s most challenging technical problems.
\n
\nThis is not a traditional executive role for someone who has moved entirely into strategy, meetings, and management. The co-founders want a leader who remains technically sharp, can demonstrate their abilities in practice, and can explain complex concepts clearly to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
\n
\nThe title will be determined by the individual’s experience and fit. The priority is finding the right person to lead the next stage of Utility Profit’s technical development.
\n
\nKey Responsibilities\n

Lead and Elevate the Engineering Organization
Advance AI-Native Software Development
Solve Utility Profit’s Most Challenging Technical Problems
Provide Technical Judgment and Architectural Leadership
Build and Develop Exceptional Engineering Talent
Partner with the Co-Founders and Product Leadership

\nIdeal Candidate Profile
\nThe ideal candidate is a technically exceptional engineering leader who has succeeded in an early-stage or high-growth technology company and still enjoys solving difficult problems firsthand. They combine the technical depth of a strong individual contributor with the judgment, communication skills, and talent-development capabilities of an executive.
\n
\nRequired experience and capabilities\n\n

Significant experience leading software engineering teams in a startup or high-growth technology environment.
Strong hands-on software engineering skills, with the ability to demonstrate technical depth rather than relying exclusively on management experience.
Experience building and scaling software products that involve complex workflows, integrations, automation, or substantial operational processes behind the user experience.
Strong knowledge of modern full-stack development, particularly JavaScript, Node.js, React, PostgreSQL, and AWS, or comparable technologies.
Experience using AI coding tools and implementing AI-enabled engineering practices.
The ability to establish structured development processes, enforce accountability, and improve the quality and speed of engineering delivery.
A track record of hiring, developing, and retaining strong engineering talent.
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to simplify complex technical subjects for executive audiences.
Strong technical judgment, ownership, and the ability to operate effectively in an environment where requirements evolve quickly.

\nParticularly valuable experience
\nExperience in one or more of the following areas would be especially relevant:\n\n

Agentic AI, AI-powered automation, and computer-use workflows.
Browser automation and interaction with legacy websites or systems that lack reliable APIs.
Fintech, payments, digital wallets, or systems involving sensitive financial and identity information.
Data-intensive platforms that require continuous improvements in accuracy, completeness, and reliability.
B2B2C technology businesses that combine a customer-facing product with complex operational workflows behind the scenes.
Building technology that connects disparate systems and automates processes previously completed by people.

\nLeadership Characteristics
\nThe right person will:\n\n

Be a builder. They enjoy solving hard problems, writing or reviewing code, and developing practical solutions.
Think independently. They can assess a challenge, identify the right approach, and move forward without requiring the co-founders to direct every decision.
Create leverage. They improve the capabilities of the entire organization through better systems, talent, processes, and AI—not just their own individual output.
Operate with discipline. They establish clear expectations, demand accountability, and follow through on commitments.
Communicate with clarity. They can explain complicated technical concepts simply and inspire confidence in their decisions.
Develop exceptional people. They know how to identify, attract, and cultivate engineers with strong technical ability and sound problem-solving instincts.
Thrive in an entrepreneurial environment. They are comfortable with ambiguity, move quickly, and prefer building something meaningful over operating within a large corporate bureaucracy.

\nTechnology Environment
\nThe current technology environment includes:\n\n

Languages and frameworks: JavaScript, Node.js, and React
Database: PostgreSQL
Cloud infrastructure: AWS
AI-enabled development: Existing use of AI coding tools, with an opportunity to establish more advanced, organization-wide development workflows
Core technical domains: Utility-service mapping, browser automation, AI-agent workflows, integrations, and secure handling of customer data

\nThe CTO will be expected to evaluate the existing environment and evolve it as needed rather than introduce complexity for its own sake.
\n
\nLocation
\nOur client is open to candidates in Austin and other major U.S. technology markets. Austin is a natural starting point for our search, but the client is willing to consider an exceptional candidate based elsewhere.
\n
\nCandidates outside Austin should be comfortable traveling to Austin regularly, potentially for approximately one week per month. The client is also open to considering how the location of the right executive could influence the future development of its engineering presence.
\n
\nCompensation
\nOur client is prepared to invest in the right technical leader. Compensation will depend on the candidate's experience, capabilities, and fit with the opportunity. The co-founders discussed a potential total-compensation range of approximately $300,000–$400,000, subject to further discussion and the final candidate profile.
\n
\nWhat is in it for you?
\nThis is an opportunity to build technology that solves a tangible, widespread problem for millions of people. Utility Profit is addressing a fragmented and difficult operational landscape with the potential to make moving and establishing utility services substantially easier.
\n
\nThe successful candidate will have meaningful ownership of the technical direction, the opportunity to build an exceptional engineering organization, and the ability to shape how AI and automation are applied to complex real-world workflows.
\n
\nFor an entrepreneurial engineering leader who wants to remain close to the technology while building a team capable of delivering at an exceptional level, Utility Profit offers the opportunity to make a lasting impact.
